Liability Coverage and Claims

Scope of Coverage

The University of Arizona is insured for liability by the State of Arizona in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes §41-621. This coverage extends to all university faculty, staff, administrators, and volunteers while acting within the course and scope of their employment and/or authorization.

How to Make a Claim

Liability claims against the University of Arizona must be initiated by the claimant in accordance with state law. Such claims are governed by the provisions of Arizona Revised Statutes §12-821.01. Liability claims are sent directly to the State, and are adjusted by State Risk Management. University officials may not act on liability claims, make any representations concerning a claim's validity, or make any offer of settlement or compensation concerning liability claims.

Liability claims may be submitted to the state on a form titled: Notice of Claim Against the State of Arizona, or through the claimant's legal counsel. The form is not available online, but can be obtained from the Risk Management Services office during normal business hours, or on request through US mail.

University employees who become aware of an incident that may result in a liability claim should immediately notify Risk Management Services.
